Today’s Topic: Bad habits come in pairs

I read a book called Outwitting The Devil by Napoleon Hill late last year.

In this book, he claims to have had an interview with the devil.

For the sake of this I am not saying the devil is real, or that it isn’t – this is more philosophical than literal.

He asks the devil all the questions relating to how human beings can be held back.

One of the concepts in the book is something called drifting.

Think of drifting as falling into bad habits.

  • Drinking or doing drugs excessively.
  • Letting lust and sex destroy or distract you.
  • Procrastination and avoidance.

In other words “headed towards the gates of hell”… our own personal hell.

One where we are trapped and consumed by our weakness, and the temptations or distractions of this world.

The biggest takeaway I had from this book?

Bad habits come in pairs.

Drifting in any direction leads us to drift in all directions.

When one bad habit creeps in, it brings with it many friends.

  • Drugs can lead to many other self destructive or negative behaviors.
  • Lust can lead to cheating, or sexual abuse.
  • Fast food can lead to full blown binge eating and poor health habits.
  • Distraction can lead to lust, drugs, procrastination, or a number of other things.

I personally experienced this recently.

I don’t drink often… in fact less than a few times a year if that.

I come from a family of alcoholics and drug abusers.

I have in the past had problems with addiction.

But, nowadays I have self control and moderation.

Anyways… it all started when I ate fast food for the first time in several months.

Raising Canes chicken.

Then I went to a Scottish festival, and they had my favorite alcohol: Mead. I had one small glass.

Next, I attended a wedding that had an open bar. A few drinks won’t hurt?

Then all of my past coping mechanisms start calling my name:

  • I already ate out, why not again?
  • A drink or a little pot to end the night isn’t that bad?
  • Nothing like lust to cure an overwhelmed mind.

Next thing you know I am craving shitty food, alcohol, all sorts of lustful things, and distracting myself with social media more.

Pump the breaks: Riley, we’ve been down those roads before… what’s up dude?

Here’s what the book teaches:

  1. All deeds (actions) follow thoughts.
  2. Drifting is caused primarily by fear.
  3. Once you begin to drift in one direction, you will in others.

Well, damn isn’t that the truth.

I’ve been stressed out and feeling fear around all the changes & growth in my life.

I let my guard down by allowing in old habits.

Once I let one in, the others soon follow.

Good thing I have self control, and a reason to not go backwards.

I don’t think we are meant to be perfect or heavily restricted… but I also think self control, and moderation in all things is a must.

Have you experienced this in your life?

Today’s Tip: How to find the answer to any of your problems

Life is confusing.

The only certain thing about it is uncertainty.

We grow up in a society that gives us a so called proven path to follow:

  • Go to school.
  • Get a “good” paying job.
  • Find a “significant” other.
  • Wait 50 years to enjoy your life when you hopefully retire.

We weren’t taught to trust ourselves, only the system and those around us.

In a world that tells you everything you need is outside of yourself… no wonder it’s so easy to feel lost and helpless.

Today we are going to change that.

Nobody knows your life, and you like yourself.

Why give your power away to everything and anything else when you need answers?

Google doesn’t have them.

Your parents and family don’t.

Social media definitely doesn’t.

Now that’s not to say you can’t get perspective or advice from outside of yourself… but the answers you seek are within.

When you feel lost, confused, and in need of clarity here’s what you can do:

Journal – This is a proven way that we can access our subconscious mind (the part that holds all of the data of our life).

Bust out a pen and paper, and start talking to yourself. Write out your thoughts, fears, concerns, and frustrations. Write yourself a question and then write the first answer that comes to mind as it’s normally your truth.

Walk – Very few things clear the mind like a good ol’ walk.

Raw dog it with no phone, music, or company. You will surely gain clarity.

Meditate – Sit down, close your eyes, breathe, and wait.

Meditation gives you space to process the complexity of what you face.

In the stillness you will connect to your truth and clarity.

Notice how none of these involved anyone else?

You have the answers.

You are overqualified to lead your life.

You are far more brilliant and capable than you give yourself credit for.

Act accordingly.

Today’s Takeaway: Grow with me

I took a break from coaching and my community recently because I felt like I still wasn’t aligned with the direction I was headed… (and a smidge of perfectionism 😂).

However with me running these retreats, and diving into helping myself and others for years with healing & more holistic living… I’ve leaned into the next evolution.

Introducing : holistic.

A community that helps people like you heal and transform what is holding you back from unlocking your power & reaching your potential in your mind, body, and spirit.

In the future I will charge a monthly membership – but you can join for free here as I build it:

I tossed around the idea of incorporating a money / career aspect but honestly – everybody and their dog is doing that.

All you see on social media is people trying to sell others on how to make more money…

I will focus instead on helping others to heal & transform since money is a byproduct of growth – and a whole lot more.

In the future I can show others what I’ve learned in business, investing, and so on… for now the most valuable thing I can offer to others is this.

Today’s Thought: The greatest tragedy in life

I don’t remember who said this or where I heard it but it highly resonated:

“Your only competition is your past self. The only person you should put on a pedestal is your future self.”

“Your only competition is your past self. The only person you should put on a pedestal is your future self.”

Unknown

Stay in your lane.

Other people can remind you of what’s possible, but your journey isn’t theirs.

Set a clear vision of who you aim to become combined with an acknowledgement of where you have been.

It makes all the difference.

Today’s Tribute: A healthy tree has strong roots

Each week I am going to give a tribute to someone special:

  • A member in the community
  • Impactful people in my life
  • One of my clients kicking ass

This week I want to shout out my parents.

As I grow older I gain deeper respect and love for the people that brought me into this world.

Not only as my parents, but as two individual human beings.

Our relationship has had it’s ups & downs, but I am proud to say right now it is the best it has ever been.

Every day I see you in myself.

I see my moms open mindedness, goofiness, and spontaneousness.

I see my dads rawness, generosity, and ambition.

I experience the light and dark that both of you carry inside of me, and embrace it with compassion.

You both have been through hell and a half… but you keep on going!

I am so proud of your growth. I also feel so blessed to know you both fully support my crazy ass life mission.

I won’t let you down.

I can’t.

Otherwise everything you, and our families have been through would be for nothing in my eyes.

Thanks for bringing me into this world.

I love you guys.

Your son,

Riley
