Riley’s Raw Thoughts: Life doesn’t go in a straight line
Something on my mind & heart:
Thank god life has contrast.
Without the light there wouldn’t be the dark. And vice versa.
The periods of time where we feel stuck, and unclear… lead to progress and clarity.
Bad food makes you appreciate good food.
You get the idea.
Nothing is static in this life. The contrast is what makes life engaging.
Wherever you are at on the spectrum of your experience:
Prepare for change.
The good times fade. The bad times pass. And sooner or later both make their way back.
What can you learn in both? How can you learn to enjoy the unfolding? Can you surf the waves in the ocean of your life?
Enjoy the ups, breathe through the downs, and find the lessons in both.
This is the human experience you chose into by coming here.
Lean in.
What I am building & learning:
In Saturdays letter I will talk more about how I arrived to my current conclusion, but for now…
I think I finally learned how to stop overwhelming myself with things.
I am closing down my real estate coaching community, and going all in on my main thing:
Open a retreat center at my holistic homestead property (farm). Then pour all excess money into multi-family real estate for a long term wealth play.
I am doing this through:
Transforming the lives of others through retreats, events, content, psychedelic medicines, community, and holistic living.
Plus teaching what I learn from all of this along the way.
Let’s recap.
Over the last two years I have rapidly moved in many different directions.
I’ve learned so much. Opportunities, people, experiences, and ideas have come and gone.
But the vision has stayed relatively the same:
Get myself out into the world. Become a leader of many. Build my dream life through the fruits I earn from helping others.
The funny thing about life is it doesn’t go in a straight line.
This is a little like how my life has looked since.
Can you relate? Have you started down the path to your goals, and found it to be much more complex than expected?
Here’s to not giving up. No matter what.
How I recently won & failed:
Our October Co-Ed Retreat was a huge success.
7 courageous souls joined us, and got to experience the magic.
Here’s how I would describe the experience:
Magical. Transformational. Fun. Relaxing. Belly Laughs. Smiles. Tears.
I recently failed (before leaving to the retreat) by:
- letting social media time go above 1 hour per day (memes, distractions, etc)
- breaking my sleep schedule again (sleeping in til around 8am when I want to get up at 5am)
But I feel reset and good about how my days are going at the moment.
Always room to improve!
Story & Lesson: How I became a “hippie”
For those of you that have known me a long time, you’ve seen me change over the years.
I’ve always been an out of the box, and do things my way kind of guy… but lately I am more “hippie” ish.
- Talking about psychedelics.
- Sharing about self love, peace, and healing.
- Preaching about God (or the universe, source, etc if that feels more appropriate for you).
Hell I am even growing out my hair right now. I don’t think of myself as a hippie, but it’s hard to argue I am not with that evidence.
Quite the change from who I was before.
A bodybuilder.
Career professional.
Neurotic self improver.
So how did all of this happen?
I think once I began to explore spirituality, myself, and the world in a deeper way… it kind of just happened.
Was it going to raves and learning how much fun it is to dance my face off?
Did psychedelics make me a so called “flower child”?
How about traveling and living spontaneously?
Probably all of the above.
But let’s be honest – is life all that fun when we are living in a vanilla way?
We all deep down have a part of us that is wild, spontaneous, and curious.
If you lived unafraid of what others thought, and true to yourself you may not be living how you do now. Am I wrong?
Here’s the real lesson in my story:
I am both all of those things, and none of them all at the same time.
I can’t be defined by some dumb label, and neither can you.
We are all a walking contradiction, especially me.
I love capitalism, and traditional values.
I am passionate about psychedelics, and nontraditional self expression.
I disagree with most of the modern movements, and I agree that everyone is free to choose how they live.
I think being a degenerate is a waste of time, and I love doing degenerate activities from time to time.
I don’t think violence is the way to handle things, and I love to be violent.
Again, nothing is black or white. It’s all a spectrum.
The important thing is to be yourself, and be unafraid of how others may choose to see or label you.
Be a good, authentic, and caring human that expresses themselves freely.
That’s all I am trying to do.
Questions & Answers: story of the chinese farmer (how are you choosing to look at things?)
During our retreat this weekend I was having a conversation with one of our participants.
She was in a position where she could either choose life, or a slow death after the retreat.
Life: Healing her deeper wounds, choosing out of self destructive patterns, and treating herself with more kindness.
Slow death: Going back to the destructive habits hurting her physical and mental health. Staying in misery, and darkness.
I asked her something along the lines of “how are you choosing to look at things?”.
Was she looking at her life as a reminder of her faults, and as a story she is stuck in?
Or was she looking at it as a lesson, and reminder of what she had to experience to create a better life for herself?
One is empowering, one would keep her stuck in the shadow.
To drive the point home I shared a story:
There is a Taoist story of an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years.
One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit.
“Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.
“Maybe,” the farmer replied.
The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses.
“How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.
“Maybe,” replied the old man.
The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg.
The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy for what they called his “misfortune.”
“Maybe,” answered the farmer.
The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army.
Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by.
The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.
“Maybe,” said the farmer.
It’s all in the way we choose to see things. We determine the meaning of the story of our lives!
