Today’s Topic: Why you aren’t achieving your goals

Do you want to accomplish your goals?

Who am I kidding, what kind of question is that… of course you do.

Well, only if you are among the 20% of the population that actually sets them in the first place.

So why then, are you not achieving them?

Lot’s of my clients, or other people I’ve talked to say things like:

  • I got busy
  • I lost motivation
  • I set them to high
  • I didn’t stay consistent
  • I didn’t give myself enough time

I’ve said those things as well, and unfortunately that isn’t why we haven’t hit our goals. Those are symptoms of a deeper cause, one that most people miss.

I’ll tell you what: I am one goal driven mofo… but that can be a huge problem at times.

Why? Because I realized after reflecting on my 25th birthday that many of the goals I set, I never even hit.

Even right now, I have goals that hit their expiration date. Guess what? I didn’t hit them.

I wanted to know why.

Here are the 3 ingredients that causes most people, myself included, to miss their goals:

Ingredient 1: Specificity

“fuzzy targets don’t get hit”

Most people set unclear goals.

  • I want to get rich.
  • I want to be happy.
  • I want to lose weight.

Those are not real goals. They more like half assed wishes or day dreams.

People avoid being specific about their goals. Being specific means being more committed.

The problem with not being specific?

That is the primary reason you don’t accomplish anything in the first place. You don’t even know what you want.

Ingredient 2: Accountability

“winners focus on the action, losers focus on the goal”

Why?

Because only setting a goal isn’t enough. You bring it to life with your effort. To stay consistent with your efforts, you need skin in the game. You need accountability.

Setting a goal is a powerful thing, but even specificity alone doesn’t mean you will achieve it.

Sometimes setting, or talking about goals is like masturbation. It can feel good in the moment, but when it’s over you don’t feel that accomplished.

That’s funny, but it’s true!

Now we have specificity, and accountability. We are going to achieve our goal right? Maybe, but most likely no.

Do you ever bake or cook with a recipe, and leave out 1/3rd of the ingredients?

If you did, would you expect to have a delicious outcome? Probably not.

Ingredient 3: Visualization

“Obsessions become your possessions”

Lastly, we have in my opinion the most important missing ingredient.

Now I know what you are probably thinking… really? Yes really.

Let me give you the quick and dirty:

Your mind cannot tell the difference between something that is imagined, and something that happens in real life.

You can learn more about that here if you don’t believe me.

Visualization works. It’s like giving your cars GPS an address, but for your mind.

Sure you may get there without it, but don’t you want to save time and make sure you get to the right place?

How many of you still use an old school map while driving? Get with the times old timer. Nowadays we use GPS : we hack our psychology to get results faster and easier.

Most people don’t, and that is the 3rd reason they typically do not achieve their goals.

Now, let’s talk about how we can put those 3 ingredients we discussed to good use.

Specificity: What you want, when you will achieve it, and what it will look & feel like when you do.

  • My goal is to be 200lbs (what)
  • By July 1st (when)
  • I will look and feel powerful, lean, and muscular.

Remember this:

The clearer your goal – the more the whole universe will conspire to help you achieve it.

Accountability: Skin in the game, someone to pat you on the back, or kick you in the ass.

Accountability leads to action, consistency, commitment and having support. All are necessary to achieve our goals.

That’s why having accountability is one of the core values in the community I have created.

Visualization: Setting your internal GPS daily towards your goal.

We create our life with what happens in our minds.

I’ll go deep on this another time, but for now what you need to know is:

  • Your mind wants things to be congruent, both inside and out.
  • Imprint anything with enough repetition and emotion and your mind has no choice but to bring it to life.

I am trained on, and learned advanced visualization techniques from bright minds like:

You now have all 3 ingredients. You are ready to bake the beautiful cake that is your goals…

Now does that mean just because we learned this today that we are guaranteed to achieve our goals?

No, sometimes you won’t. But, this secret formula is going to be the reason you do when you do, more often than you don’t.
